Carved wooden Nō mask of an incarnation of a god or a plant spirit in the form of an old man, Jō, probably a variant of Ko-jō, lacquered in black on inside. Deeply carved in pale wood with prominent cheekbones, brow furrowed in waves, deep oval hollows around the eyes, which have lowered lids and apertures with paint around them. Mouth open, lips painted red, teeth gold, gums black. Light brown hair issues from holes in sides of mask, caught together at centre of forehead. Beard of long strands of hair of the same colour. Moustache, hairs under lower lip and eyebrows indicated by painted black lines.
