figure of Puxian (ritual & belief: representations)

Glazed stoneware figure of Puxian (bodhisattva Samantabhadra), who represents compassion and the Law of the Buddha. Puxian is depicted with feminine characteristics with head, hands and feet highlighted in paint. She sits on a double lotus pedestal in a lotus position (padmasana) with both leg crossed; wears white robe and headscarf; right hand holds a scroll that represents book of the Dharma, and left hand grasps a Buddhist rosary. Hand moulded, pale grey stoneware applied with white, blue, green and café au lait glaze.
