fan

Embroidered silk fan of floral shape, stretched over a cane frame with a central rib which is slightly bent on the top and secured with a ruyi, or stylised sceptre, shaped gilt metal clasp, trimmed with patterned silk ribbon. The rose red silk leaf is embroidered with two bats and peony and chrysanthemum blossom. A blue silk rosette with painted lotus blossom and angular scrolling pattern is attached to the central bottom of the fan leaf, extending to an ebony handle fitted with bone finials painted in green. The handle is embellished with incised bats and cloud scroll design, bordered by key-fret pattern. The bats are highlighted in red paste and each holds a swastika motif in its mouth.
