Horizontal scroll painting on paper. The long scroll is divided into 12 sections. Each represents a step of the rice cultivating process, such as watering the seedlings, ploughing with water buffalo, sowing, transplanting young plants, watering plants, harvesting, bound sheaves being stacked, threshing with flails, etc. The inscriptions are verses from a poem composed by the Qing dynasty emperor Kangxi (1654-1722), quoted from his ‘ploughing-and-weaving painting’ (in Chinese: 康熙御製耕織圖).
