Gandharan terracotta figure of a four-legged animal.
An elephant figurine in red terracotta with traces of a dark red slip, trunk missing, legs intact, no eyes, ears luted on and now damaged at the edges. The crown of the head extends upwards to form a sort of low fan. This is a rare example of an almost intact speciment of what must in its day have been a child’s toy. There seems not to have been a site abbreviation marked on this object. It is probably part of the Gordon collection and so surely to have come North India or the old North West Frontier where he was most active. Archaeological context: presumably unstratified and from a surface collection. Early Historic Period, late centuries BCE. Given by Col. D H Gordon (1952/3).
