Gandharan terracotta figure in the form of a horse head.
The head and part of the upper neck of a horse figurine in red terracotta with a dark red slip and an elaborate appliqué bridle (and bit?). There is a further appliqué line on the neck, realistic ears, and eyes made from small points of appliqué matrix. This figure is probably a children's plaything, as is the case for most other model animals found in such profusion in ancient sites in South Asia. Marked on the broken neck in black ink with a now almost illegible site label probably 'SB' (ie, Sari Bahlol, Mardan District, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan). Archaeological context: presumably unstratified and from a surface collection. Early Historic Period, early centuries. Given by Col. D H Gordon (1952/3).
