pipe bowl (pipes (narcotics & intoxicants: smoking))

Pipe bowl made of wood with carved names around the sides of the pipe, a pair of crossed swords with the letters E. F. and B. surrounding them and a portrait of Schuderroff on the base of the pipe.

It is Mr Schuderoff's pipe and was to commemorate a fencing club (Fecht Bund) from somewhere beginning with E. They have two club mottos one in Latin and one in german which I guess they shout while carving desirable scars on wach pther, first letters FTG. Mr Trompheller has drawn a (delightful) portrait of Schuderoff on the bottom - (Trompheller his Schuderoff) in what appear to be early C19 clothes and beard - (1820-1850) but I'm no expert. I believe they still wear the silly hat. What a depressing piece. [Signature] 4.5.88 Of Course it doesn't come from Holland. The club seems to have some Jewish members - so perhaps from the Rhineland - Essen?
