basket (containers)

Basket formed of wide strips of bamboo woven in a plain weave from a rectangular base. The basket is shaped to have a pronounced shoulder at each end, but with sides which rise vertically. The neck has narrow strips of bamboo very simply plaited horizontally surrounding the neck. Two lengths of cord, knotted together at the centre, emerge from the inside of the basket, to which they are fixed at each end of the neck by a knot on the outside. There is resin at the bottom of the basket, probably from use.

This basket would have been used for keeping fish alive after they had been caught. Many cultures use similar baskets in South East Asia. The rim may be made of bamboo and the body from the inner part of the bamboo stalk.
