Hand-held cast brass mirror, circular, riveted with a rectangular handle wrapped by rattan wicker. Plain on the reflective side. Decorated on the reverse side with two Chinese characters meaning 'double happiness', shuang xi, within a raised circle, surrounded by five bats with heads facing towards these characters. A maker's mark within a rectangular frame at the bottom, but partly covered by the handle. The inscriptions indicate the mirror was made in Hunan province in China. The mirror may have been exported to Japan where the handle could have been added. To have a handle such as this is Japanese, but the mirror itself is Chinese.
