divination objects; chart

Liturgical manuscript made up of alternate text and diagrams. Each of the diagrams contains a mantra and probably represents a deity. The text below each diagram is for recitation and relates directly to the adjoining mantra. The text would have been read as the liturgy of a ritual whereby the practitioner visualises himself in the centre of the diagram and addresses deities in the various directions for protection and help on the path to enlightenment. The final diagram (not on the reverse) names the animals of the zodiac. Green textile, probably felt, glued to 2 sections enables the chart to be folded up to fit between them.

This manuscript probably formed part of the personal library of a lama or yogi. It is a liturgy which may well have been used for an individual’s daily practice. Whoever used it would have been unlikely to have sold or gifted it during their lifetime. Each of the diagrams contains a mantra and probably represents a deity.
