According to Edward Hart, writing on 30 April 1927, 'Bottom left (no 1): adult female, May 1868, summer plumage; top left (no 2): adult male, May 1868, summer plumage; middle (no 3): adult male, May 1868, summer plumage; (no 4): adult female, May 1868, summer plumage; eight young, 1868. Shot by me at Dudmoor, Christchurch. Sexes alike. Summer and winter plumage differ. Mounted by me'.
