Wot, panpipes. Nine stopped pipes cut from graduated lengths of bamboo, each with a beeswax stopper at the distal end, are fixed in a circle around a bamboo core.
This set of wot panpipes was purchased from a group of Lao musicians from North East Thailand who performed at the Purcell Room in London in 1989. They were made by one of the performers, Mr Song Sak Prathumsin, who also played the jew’s harp and xylophone in the performance. In performance the apex of the beeswax cone surmounting the pipes rests on top of the chin, and the player rotates the instrument to direct his breath against the edge of the pipe that he wishes to play.
