321.322 Necked box lutes or necked guitars

Guittar (English guitar), cittern. Two-piece back is of maple veneer. The ribs are in two pieces. The head is probably composite. Fingerboard perhaps not original. Painted purfling; inlaid edging between table and ribs. Watchkey tuning. Ivory bridge. The rose is a twelve pointed star with fretwork between the slender mother-of-pearl rays. The fingerboard of red tortoiseshell with mother-of-pearl decoration. Large flat finial to the head Two ivory hitch-studs missing. Screws of tailpiece missing. Four strings missing, remainder rusty, one string broken. Decoration of fingerboard defective. Has date 1767.
