421.121.12 Open side-blown flutes with fingerholes

Transverse flute inscribed 'No. 1 D'. Bamboo tube with no nodes. Six fingerholes of uneven size and no thumbhole. A black mark appears on the inside of the pipe beneath each hole. This and the black colouration of the inside rims of the holes suggest they were burnt out. Fingerholes are round, but embouchure is slightly enlongated. End cap and distal ferrule of a yellow metal coated with a white metal. Smoothed off joints apparent on the sides of both. Writen lengthwise in black ink beneath the embouchure: 'No. 1. D'; a gold and red label between the embouchure and the toneholes reads: 'BENGAL FLUTE/CALCUTTA'; bore at distal end: approx 13 mm.
