421.112.3 Mixed open and stopped panpipes

The chuli siku (panpipes) consist of a double rank (row) of eight bamboo pipes. The ends of the pipes in the rank nearest the player are stopped by a node, and each produces a single note. Other than the smallest pipe, all the pipes in the rank that are furthest from the player are open, and produce harmonic effects when they are blown simultaneously with the front rank. These panpipes are played with another set of chuli panpipes (Museum no. M27-1990), 'hocket' - style, with the two pipers playing alternate notes.

These pipes are designed to be played with a smaller set of chulli siku pipes (museum number M27-1990). The two players alternate notes so that the melody passes back and forth between them, 'hocket' style.
