Accurate copy of a Maori bullroarer constructed from a piece of hard wood of lenticular shape and section pierced at one end. The rope is less skilfully palliated than a Maori piece would be, although brick red paint decoration mimics traditional Maori paint of red ochre and shark oil.
This instrument is an accurate copy of a Maori bullroarer, probably a puurorohuu. Sound is produced by swinging the instrument around the player's head using the cord handle. It is thought that the puurorohuu was once used in Maori ceremonies to produce rain. The rope is less skilfully plaited than a Maori piece would be, although brick red paint decoration mimics traditional Maori paint of red ochre and shark oil
