Treadle and crank drive stamped "Hof Schlosser Böhme in Karlsruhe." The edges of the glass bowls are stroked with the fingers in order to produce musical notes. 33 glass bowls of graduated sizes sound a chromatic scale of two octaves and eight notes (f-sharp to d'''). The glasses with gold-edged rims sound the accidentals while the plain bowls sound the natural notes. The bottom of the mahogany-veneered case is lined to hold water which wets the bowls as they rotate on the axle, operated by the pedal on the left.
The bottom of the case is lined to hold water that wets the glass bowls as they rotate on the axle operated by the foot pedal. The wet glasses are stroked with the fingertips. However, it is now thought (2018) that the trough was designed only to catch excess water, not to partly immerse the bowls. Such immersion is found adversely to affect the timbre, muffle the volume and change the pitch of the individual bowls. This was pointed out to us in an email from Den Childs, Lessal,15340 Mourjou, France of 4 February 2018, and is corroborated by the modern player, William Zeitler.
