211.11 Separate vessel drums

Rebana mangkok, conical drum, closed, with single membrane. Attached to carrying stick with vegetable material. With beater M10a-1980.

This instrument was purchased by Jean Jenkins, the Horniman Museum's first curator of musical instruments, in 1973, in a village near Kuala Kerai, Kelatan State. While she was in Malaysia she made a collection of musical instruments and shadow puppets.
