face mask (mask)

Chinese laughing girl mask. Papier mache with internal wooden stick support structure. Painted face with elongated earlobes and dark hair.

Laughing boy and girls masks are common carnival elements in parades to celebrate Chinese New Year. Perhaps linked to the ‘laughing Buddha’ mask tradition. Laughing Buddha’s are part of the traditional lion dance routine, teasing the lion with a fan of leaves and encouraging the lion to jump around.
