Hat for carnival costume.

Part of trinidadian carnvial costume produced for Shrove Tuesday 2000 as part of 'Pretty Mas.' All Mas bands parade throught streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad's capital. Tradition started in 18th century with French plantation owners organised masquerades (mas) and balls before Lent. Enslaved people could not take part, so formed parallel celebration called 'Canbolulay'. Each year bands choose themes, reflecting changing social identity country. Late 1950s shift traditional religious/ western historical themes to celebrating African heritage and natural world.
