mancala game

Wooden mancala board with 64 stones for pieces and divided into 32 sections.

Mancala games are very popular in Africa. There are many different ways to play a game of mancala. You can have a very simple game for a toddler or a very complex mathematical game that is as hard as chess or backgammon. This board has four ranks or rows, which is mostly only found in South and East Africa. The more common version, called Owari, from West Africa, only has 2 ranks. Pieces are made from seeds, beans or stones. You win by capturing the most pieces. The game is over when neither player can capture a remaining piece.
