Red felt tarboosh with black tassle.
usually known as a 'fez' but is a more modern version of the fez called a 'tarboosh'. This style originated from Fez, Morocco. It was introduced into Turkey in 1826 to replace the turban. Red in colour and more like modern European hats, the Fez became a badge of national identity. The first Egyptian-made tarboosh appeared in 1825 and by the 1837 was produced in great numbers. It became a national emblem worn in Egyptian courts, civil service, armies and the police service. In 1925 Kamal Ataturk, banned the fez in Turkey as a modernisation measure. The tarboosh survived into the 1970s. Today both types of fez are only seen at festivals or manufactured for tourists.
