Mask like this would have generally been worn by a young man at carnvial in Mexico. Men tend to wear and dance in masks and women make elaborate costumes for them. These performances are an important part of many different cultural and religious fesitvals held across Mexico throughout the year. Participants in many of Mexico's mask dances fulfull religious vows through their performance, and are also responsible for educating and informing the community about social values and other concerns about life. Many different cultural groups in Mexico use masks such as these as a way to rememeber and act out their histories and beliefs.
