Two newspaper clippings presenting charitable acts and donations made by F. J. Horniman. Unknown publication, unknown year.
The first clipping has a torn right hand side, therefore most of the text on that side of the document is missing. It consists of two bits of published correspondence between Frank J. Horniman and J. E. Gutch, the Secretary of the Sports Committee, Forest Hill. The first note, from F. J. Horniman to J. E. Gutch, lets the addressee know that the owner of the Horniman Museum is donating £5 5s to the Committee, and the sum will be repeated every year, in order to offer support to the activities of the Committee that promote health and fellowship. J. E. Gutch’s reply is a thank you note and an offer to send to Mr. Horniman whatever number he may require of dinner tickets.
The second clipping is also torn and missing text on the right hand side. It presents F. J. Horniman’s offer to make a contribution to St. Peter’s Church on Lordship Lane, in the form of improvements to be made with the organ. F. J. Horniman’s letter to Rev. S. J. Pulley is published here, showing Mr. Horniman’s concern with the poor quality of the musical service. In his view, mostly to blame is the incomplete state of the organ. His proposition to enlarge the organ vestry, and to then complete the organ according to the original, was more than well received by the vicar.
