lota (water container (food service))

Water pot, or lota, made of brass and copper inlaid with silver. The container is squat and bulbous, and has a small round foot. Short neck and everted rim at the mouth. The body of the container is decorated with inlaid and engraved decoration in horizontal bands. The main band has medallions containing lotus flowers in silver on a copper background. Below this is a band of floral scrolling. Above around the neck is a band of lotus petals. The inside of the foot has been lined with paper on which there is a label, with the old accession number 9.170. Label: one price tag.
