incense burner

Part of a bronze incense burner (koro), depicting a man on a bull. The robed man sits sideways on a saddle, and holds a scroll in one hand. His hair is arranged in a topknot. There is a roughly circular hole at the top of his back for the release of incense smoke. The figure has a small peg on the underside, which slots into a hole on the back of the bull. There is an inscription in red on the underside of the figure. The man depicted is the ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi (Lao Tsu).
