Carved Tongan pole club (Mills Type D1). A tapering pole club with hemispherical head and slightly flared concave butt. The entire surface is carved in a series of geometric patterns, which are organized into a rectilinear checker work above the waist, and a falling spiral below. In the head end is inlaid a four-pointed star of Sperm Whale (Physeter catodon) ivory, and the club also bears two pairs of eyes approximately one fith of the way down its length.
