Pipe rest carved from deer horn in the form of an octopus standing on two legs with a tenugui cloth in hachimaki style on its head. Its legs emerge above and below from a kind of case with a cloud design on it, with the lid above its head. Eyes in mother-of-pearl. Two characters set in a small rectangular mother-of-pearl inlay on the back towards the bottom read:'TAMA-ICHI', probably the name of the owner or maker.
