bag (containers)

A small embroidered drawstring silk bag, roughly square in shape. The upper half of both sides is made of dark blue satin. The lower half on one side is made from yellow satin, with four black embroidered Chinese characters. The obverse has white satin embroidered with a landscape scene, which includes a bridge and a pagoda. Dividing the front and the back sections are two different braids with two rows of couched gold-coloured metal-wrapped thread. The bag has a green drawstring handle. Looped through the drawstring on each side are two tassels, one green and one pale purple. The tassels are wrapped with gold-coloured metal-wrapped thread and have a knot above them. The bag is lined with pink tabby woven cotton.

Rachel Stein translates the characters as 'Tian tu xiu' meaning 'From the heavens emerges excellence'.
