mangle board

Carved woooden mangle board from Norway, dated to 1829. A long rectangular piece of wood with patterns incised onto the surface. The patterns are largely geometric and are only found on the upper surface of the board. Briefly, the patterns comprise of; a repeating zig zag running along the right, left, and top most edge of the front of the board; there are three carved circles each containing a rosette motif, with a fourth circle contains a design of overlapping segments; a small rectangle outlined by a repeating zig zig pattern is located between the three and fourth circle; and a square with lines running diagonally, vertically, and horizontally is located between the first and second circle. There is a handle, carved in the shape of a horse, which is made from a seperate piece of wood and attached by a a sliding dovetail joint. The handle is situated at the lower end of the board, and ends at the base of the board.
