carving (ritual & belief: representations)

Carved wooden figure of the Madonna & Child, Mary Immaculata, of carved oak. The figure is standing on a crescent moon with a serpent (partly missing) beneath. Mounted on a rectangular wooden plinth made of several pieces of wood. There is some historic damage: the fingers of the right hand, and the Child's left foot are missing. Some cracks in the wood. The remains of gesso and pigment suggest that this statue was originally covered in gesso and painted.

probably set in an alcove in a church, possibly with stars around the head.
