Wooden cylindrical container made of section of bamboo & wooden carved lid. The base of the container is black; after it reaches the next nodule in the bamboo it is coloured red, this section forming the major portion of the container. A black band band of bamboo reinforces the neck of the container, which has been finished off with a concave inward-facing rim. The stopper is substantial, with a round top with two projections from it, to either side. One ends in a cylindrical spout with a small hole through it; the other, the handle, curves up to end in a square section, and has a decorative element underneath. The top of the stopper has incisions making decorative patterns in geometrical shapes and cross-hatching. There is a London County Council label tied to the stopper with string, with the date 28/8/52 crossed out, and 27.8.52/1 written in pencil underneath; the words 'wooden vessel, Sumatra, Mr Taffs' are typed. Possibly for palm wine.
