Set of 30 Chinese chequers pieces (Xiangqi), red versus plain. Round wooden disks marked with engraved Chinese characters: one general (jiang), one marshal (shuai), four counselors (shi), two elephants (xiang), two ministers (xiang), four horses (ma), four chariots (pronounced 'ju' or 'che'), two cannons (pao), two catapults (pao), 10 soldiers (consisting of five 'zu' and 5 'bing'). To distinguish between the two sides, half of the pieces have been painted in red over the engraved markings. One red horse and one plain soldier are missing.
