Wooden ancestral tablet painted red with green and gilded decoration. This is a tablet commemorating three members of the Chen (陳) family: Mr. Chen and his two wives. On the top of the tablet, the four characters read 十三世祖 ‘shi san shi zu’, which indicates that these three people are the 13th generation of the Chen family. The husband’s shrine is always in the middle column, with his wives beside him. Here, the middle column reads 皇清顯考陳公神位 ‘huang qing xian kao chen shi shen wei’, which means ‘the shrine of Mr. Chen’. 皇清 ‘huang qing’ reveals that Mr. Chen was both born and died in the Qing dynasty, and the use of the words顯考 ‘xian kao’ implies that this tablet might have been offered by his son.
The right column is 陳門區氏安人神位 ‘chen men qu shi an ren shen wei’, means ‘the shrine of Mr. Chen’s wife Mrs. Qu’; and the left column reads 陳門倫氏安人神位 ‘chen men lun shi an ren shen wei’, which means ‘the shrine of Mr. Chen’s wife Mrs. Lun’.
