box (containers)

Rectangular wooden 'bunko' box with tray and lid. The surface is lacquered black and decorated with floral scenes in silver and maki-e gold. On the lid is a scene with a palace, clouds, pine and bamboo, in Japanese 'ancient mood'. The flowers are similar to chrysanthemums but are miyakowasure. Other flowers are hagi (on the side); kikyo; ominaeshi, and susuki (Japanese pampas grass). These are known as autumn flowers in Japan. A section is cut away at either side of the lid to ease opening. Inside is a plain black lacquered tray.

Label: One brown paper label found with the object.
