book cover

Front cover of scripture binder or glegs shing. Although the outlines of the three figures are not very clear, judging by their mudras it is possible that they are the three Buddhas of Past, Present and Future. The figures would then be, from left to right: Buddha Shakya Muni of the Present, Buddha Dipamkara of the Past, and Buddha Maitreya of the Future.

The smaller figurines surrounding each of the three Buddhas may represent disciples whilst those figures above, in the air, could represent dakas and dakinis or other celestial beings, perhaps showering flowers.

Travelling monks and lamas would carry their most important scriptures bound with wooden covers like these to protect from wear and tear.
