Children play with toys they are given. This toy, a simple terracotta horse on wheels, was once owned by a Roman child who was expected to learn through play, roughly mimicking the movements of a real horse. Its small size and simplicity allow it to be understood and manipulated by a child of a young age, gradually becoming aware through association of the importance of horses in the Roman world, becoming familiar with them in a safe environment before moving towards the real thing.
