chatelaine

Chatelaine (chap-chap) consisting of a strap and suspension loop. The flared strap is hemmed with black leather around a central panel of foliate and cloud embroidery in metal thread on a red ground. The central panel is bordered by appliqué thread in red, pink green and orange. The bottom of the strap is hidden by a teardrop panel of white metal, at the centre of which is a brass panel bearing an empty mounting for a stone. There is a face of glory at the base of the panel from which hangs a bi-lobed suspension loop, also in white metal.

A chatelaine like this is hung from a woman’s belt. From it can be suspended all manner of useful things such as an individual’s spoon or a needle case.
