Celempung-siter, box zither with painted wood. This instrument combines two zithers, tuned to different scales: the celempung slendro and the celempung pelog. The instrument is strung on both sides, twelve courses of paired fine steel strings, tuned to different scales (salendro ie: slendro, and pelog). The metal legs at the end are quickly reversible.
The metal legs at the end are quickly reversible. This allows the player to turn the instrument over and play in a different scale quickly, without retuning. It is played with the higher (leg) end away from the musician, the narrower end towards the seated player, the strings picked by both thumbs. Although said to show some European influence, it is now a familiar part of the otherwise highly conservative Central Javanese court gamelan.
