112.122 Sliding rattles

Angklung, sliding rattle of bamboo.

The maker, Daeng Soetinga, is generally credited with the modern revival of interest in the angklung. He ran a cultural centre focussed on the instrument. Daeng was active in schools music education, for which the angklung ensemble is well suited, playing largely Western tunes (such as 'Colonel Bogey'). This instrument was a gift to Jonathan Hugh-Jones from Daeng, who was the brother of his employer.
