winnowing tray

A circular winnowing basket, tempeh or nyiyu. The base is woven from strips of bamboo of even widths in a twill weave, with six parallel strips of greener bamboo in one direction spaced evenly across the base. The base is secured by a circular frame made from two wider lengths of bamboo between which the ends of the base are gripped. The outer part is of narrower width, and is secured in its circle by a band with which the ends are bound together in two places, held in place by a notch and an aperture. The inner band of the frame is wider and so projects higher than the outer band. It is wedged in place, the cut end butting up against a notch in one of the nodules. It is also secured by a narrow strip of bamboo wound around the band close to the ends.
