Balinese astrological chart painted on canvas. Square multi-coloured painting on cotton cloth divided into forty-nine square cells (seven rows horizontal by seven rows vertical), forming an astrological chart (pelelintangan). The horizontal axis lists the days of the seven day week; the vertical axis lists the days of the 5 day week. At the top is a header row and at the bottom a footer row offering some general attributes for those born on that day of the seven day week. The other 35 squares thus show all possible combinations of coincidences of the two systems, which have repercussions on the character of a person born on such a day. The symbols indicate associated gods, shadow puppet characters, trees, birds, animals and syllables for each combination. Thus all such charts closely resemble one another.
