Woman's olive green under-sash (obi-age) decorated in tie-dye (shibori) technique. The pattern was produced by tying small knots into the fabric in parallel rows, reinforced with thread, to resist the dye, at the same time leaving some parts untied. After the dyebath the stitches holding the knots in place were removed, leaving a raised texture which resulted in an elastic effect in the sash. These parts appear paler than the rest of the sash, since the points under the knots are white. The untied parts are thus a darker green. They are in curvilinear shapes which resemble stylised cloud shapes in the finished sash. The central section of the sash has been folded and stitched together.
