architectural drawing

Isometric drawing, pen and watercolour. Boosey & Hawkes Factory, Deansbrook Road, Edgware. Entitled 'Sonorous Works, Edgware'. Drawn by Ernest Seel ARIBA DIP ARCH, framed in painted wood frame.

The factory was built in 1924 by Hawkes & Son and was aptly named 'Sonorous Works'. Boosey & Co. and Hawkes & Son merged to become Boosey & Hawkes in 1930 and Sonorous Works became the main site for instrument production and music printing. The water tower, which was painted to resemble a military drum, was remembered as a local landmark. In 2001, Boosey & Hawkes vacated Sonorous Works. The factory was subsequently pulled down and a housing development was built on the land. The heritage of the site is recalled in street names such as 'Clarinet Court' and 'Symphony Close'. This drawing hung in the lobby of the Boosey & Hawkes premises in Watford.
