Pastoral oboe. Rosewood body. Nickel silver-plated keys with salt spoon cups and fish skin pads. Boehm system fingering. Two joints: body joint and bell. Nine millimetre diameter vent hole in bell. Inscription on both joints, stamped and highlighted in gold paint: BREVETE/TRIEBERT/A. PARIS; Two paper labels attached to reverse of body joint, one with the number 81 (Chatwin catalogue number), the other, which is in D. J. Blaikley's hand, reads: 61 MUSETTE OR/SMALL OBOE/-ROSEWOOD-BOEHM/SYSTEM.

This instrument was once the property of the 19th century oboe virtuoso Antoine Joseph Lavigne. Lavigne was a champion of the Boehm system oboe. The pastoral oboe was a small oboe intended for popular music-making, but it ultimately failed to establish a permanent niche.
