111.14 Concussion vessels or vessel clappers

Pair of cup-shaped cymbals formed from two nickel-plated iron bicycle bells. Each bell has jute string threaded through the apex of the dome. Made in Majuli, Jorhat district.

This pair of cymbals made of bicycle bells was devised as a substitute for the khuti tal cymbals (Horniman Museum number: 2004.561). They were used to keep the beat in loko git (folk music) performances, and devotional music played at home.
