bagpipe

Scottish highland half-size pipes, reel pipes. Woollen outer bag, leather inner. Dalbergia melanoxylon (African blackwood, grenadilla) stocks and pipes. Marine ivory ferrules. Bass drone in three joints and two tenor drones each in two joints. Blowpipe with detachable horn mouthpiece. String lapped tenons. Chanter missing. Fragment of silk or ribbon tied around end of bass drone upper joint.

The reel pipes are closely related to the Highland pipes. They are based on a similar tuning but have a smaller bag and narrow-bore drones and chanter. Reel pipes are occasionally made with bellows, but are more usually mouth-blown. They are much quieter than the Highland pipes and are therefore more appropriate for indoor use.
