tube skirt; textile

A blue/black tube skirt with fine stripes and small weft ikat patterning. Woven as bands (but worn as stripes), the skirt cloth has very fine (one warp end only) red and blue stripes, broken up with white and blue or white and purple weft ikat patterning on a blue/black ground. The top of the skirt has a separate strip. It is made from a narrow white and wider navy blue striped material. The bottom of the skirt has a wide predominantly white band and with red, green, yellow and blue bands. A skirt such as this is worn on ceremonial occasions and at dances. This style is also worn by older women for everyday wear. [Textile]
