Lacquered wooden box in the shape of a durian. The bowl-shaped box-section has been carved with exterior spikes which have been painted a gold colour. The smooth inside and foot are lacquered red. This type of box was used as a container for such things as betel ingredients. The fruit represented is of symbolic significance in Malay culture.
