Cylindrical double membrane drum (maram) with wooden body and hide membranes, binding and pair of loops (to which the orange textile shoulder belt is attached).
The drum is struck with the hands. The wooden shell is made by a carpenter who works according to the instructions given by the musician. The skin heads are provided by a craftsman (kollan or tolkollan), who is traditionally specialised in producing drum membranes. The drum plays a complicated rhythm for the pāṇi ritual music at the Hindu temple festivals in Central Kerala. In this ceremony the musician acts as a priest.
